I say Light over Lelouch, if only because he doesn't have the power hack that is Geass. Light uses way more intellect and cunning in dealing with adversaries that Lelouch has to.

I would have to agree. Brain vs. Brain, light definitely was stronger at using his intellect to outwit his enemies. However, Lelouch is definitely more of a nifty strategist. Although Light was always 3 or 4 steps ahead of L and the rest of those trying to catch him, Lelouch tends to lead off with an overall strategy and deviate accordingly when he's delt a hand of cards that he didn't expect. Light seemed to always have everything go somewhat according to plan because he could write who was to die in his book. In that sense, he had more control over the events than Lelouch and didn't need to develop mad strats on the fly. Tough comparison though. Death Note was sometimes ridiculous on how many steps ahead of everyone Light was; it was as if he was Ms. Cleo. Who's ready for a free reeeeeedin'

Lelouche would tear Light up on an intellectual level. Yagami Light's schemes started and ended typically no an individual basis...Lying his way through and leading people the wrong way. Lelouch, on the other hand, encompasses masses of people into his plans and steers them the way he wants/needs them to in order to achieve his goals. Yagami may be smart, but I think if Lelouche was placed in Yagami Light's shoes...He wouldn't have gotten shot at the end and sure as hell wouldn't have pickes some 2-bit scrub to do his job ^~
