So what do you guys think?
I'm almost 30% into the story, I just got Falco and beat that Ape Robot thing.
I'll do the graphic rant first. Zelda: TP like most people with HDTVs over 40+ inchs looks horrible. With a native res of 720P it doesn't look too bad, native res of 1080p and it looks horrendous. Mario Galaxy, etc, are nice, almost as good as SDTV or even EDTV. So I figured Brawl would be no different. Nope. Brawl looks straight up terrible. After spending an hour with all the TV settings for the Wii's input, I got the game looking better but it's a toss up between having a sharp crisp heavily jagged image vs a blurry soft image. 1 v 1 it looks fine, 2 v 2 it looks terrible due to the camera panning out causing a jagged mess.
On to the good stuff. The story is cool, I love all the heroic feats from all the heros of all of our Nintendo games. I like the way you choose your character and all of the character's personalities show true through the story movies.
The controls are touchy, too damn touchy, maybe it's because I have a brand new wireless stick but I have a very hard time taking a step or two in any direction just to pick up an item sometimes. I'll usually overshoot it or run past it. The story itself is fun and great, the stages not so much. The first 2hrs it was fun, after that it's just a rehased 2-D "go down or go up go left or go fight" type thing. With trophies hidden in places that conjured up memories of Mega Man X. The play length is definitely longer Kendra and I played about 1.5hrs 2v2 against random cpus and on average people were going up to 200% before going off the level. Basically you don't fly as far as you did before which is a good thing. It helps even out the big hit characters against speed characters generally.
My favorite character out of the new cast so far is...Ike. He is such a badass powerhouse, but he's stupidly slow. Any character with some speed would run circles around him. His flair and explosive moves make up for his short comings though. During any of the story stages, I'd pick Ike, then Marth, then Meta Knight and once Ike is down. (Easily due to his speed) I usually rip past everything with Marth afterwards. There is a clear difference in having speed vs power in the story mode. Meta Knight is also an awesome character and his intro movie vs Marth is one of the best scenes in the game so far. Right up there with Kirby saving ass left and right and the part where Mario thinks Link killed Princess Peach. There's something awesome about having Mario pissed at Link with Yoshi on Link's side. Pip is awesome too, his up special is awkward with the whole flying thing. I guess because it's a two part special/attack. Most characters' up A is a platform saver and an attack in one action.
It's a definite improvement over the SSBM. The leap between the two games isn't close to the leap between SSB and SSBM, but Brawl expands on the series even more. My personal experience wasn't nearly as excited as most people playing SSBB because of the graphics on a 46in TV. N64 to SSBM...the graphics were outstanding and still are...on SDTV. But there was that leap. I on the other hand get to play the game on a graphic quality far far far less than many people who own a Wii.
I'll probably bite the bullet and get a TV stand for my SDTV and put the Wii on that, for specific games.
P.S. Ness is a beast. He made Lucas look like a little bitch during Lucas' intro into the story mode.
